conceptual vocabulary:

anomie

the term literally means ‘lawlessness’ but is best understood to describe a state of ‘normlessness’. in this state, we suffer a lack of commonly held standards and expectations that provide meaningful context for the individual. thus the source of shared boundaries, purpose and belonging in society.

this feeling-in-common is fundamental to social harmony, providing a basis for mutual understanding and trust.
thus it’s useful for describing the modern individual’s sense of disconnection from a unifying community, in a heavily atomised society and individualistic culture.

you might see the role of our current form of capitalism in this. have you observed people identifying far more strongly with a ‘fandom’ than the people living around them?
or otherwise taking a sense of self and of belonging from brands, products and media franchises?

among other things, anomie may be one of the consequences of modern states being treated primarily as economies by the politician class.
rather than nations (self-identifiable regional/ethnic groupings of people). or cultures.
or something else that acknowledges us as humans, not just interchangeable consumers/producers.
